Ivan Petrovich!
With particular pleasure I read your Report, presented to

for MY Person that I am accustomed to seeing in you.
This obliges ME in this case to testify to you MY

Dear Ivan Petrovich!
I owe you a lot for not answering your four letters for so long, which I received
at different times, and therefore I begin by asking you for your generous
forgiveness; but one of the main reasons for this was my intention to return to
St. Petersburg at the beginning of winter and which changed for a reason
known, of course, to you. Thank you for not forgetting me and believing in my
unchanging friendship.
