Born in Kazan, in the family of judge

and Evdokia Yakovlevna Kryzhanovskaya.
During his school years, he took lessons from the Kazan artist, professor
Pashkovsky. After graduating from school, he entered the Kazan Military
School, which he graduated in 1909. He continued to paint.
With the outbreak of the First World War, he was drafted into the active army
and fought on the Austrian front in the cavalry. In 1916, a senior officer of the
44th Don Cossack Regiment, Sotnik (a centurion), was seconded as an observer
pilot to the 7th Aviation Fighter Squad, then was transferred to an aviation
school in Gatchina near Petrograd.
On April 4, 1917, he participated in the delivery of a standard with the
monogram of the abdicated Emperor to Petrograd to carry out the work of
removing the monogram.
After graduating from aviation school in 1917, he received the title of "military
pilot". Participant in combat operations in the Civil War of 1918-1922. Military
pilot of the army of Admiral Kolchak. In 1919, Staff Captain Ilyin was
appointed commander of the 2nd Siberian Air Squadron.
In May 1918 he married
Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Komova
, a graduate of
the Drawing School of the College of Arts. With the arrival of the Red Army in
the city, he fled with his wife, mother and brother to the east and reached
Omsk. Later the family moved to Chita, and from there through Harbin to
Japan.
Having settled in Tokyo, he made a living from portraits. Together with his
wife and brother, he held two successful exhibitions and sales (1921, 1922).
At the end of 1922, he and his wife left for the United States and settled in San
Francisco. In 1928 he accepted American citizenship.
In 1924, the Ilyins (Gleb, Petr and his wife Nadezhda) organized a joint
exhibition at the City of Paris art gallery. In 1926, the brothers became
members of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco, which played an important
role in their further advancement in the art market. In subsequent years he
gained fame as a portrait painter of the academic school; painted landscapes
and subject compositions.
He was a member and regular exhibitor of the San Francisco Society of Artists
(1924–1950). Bohemian Club (1927–1950), California Art Club and The Society
for Sanity in Art (since 1936). He repeatedly received various awards,
including 2nd (1927) and 3rd (1934) prizes at the California State Exhibitions,
1st prize (1940) and the Prize for Fame (1947) at exhibitions at the California
Palace of the Order of Honor Legion (San Francisco). In 1939, a personal
exhibition was held in San Francisco and Chicago.
Materials related to the artist's life are kept in the archives of the California
Historical Society (San Francisco). The works are in museums in San
Francisco, Chicago, Oakland and Nevada.
