Since childhood, he had artistic talent, like his older brother Peter. Took
painting lessons from Professor Pashkovsky.
He graduated with honors from the Kazan State Art Academy (1911), where
his mentor was Nikolay Feshin. Probably, the portrait of
Natalya Borisovna
Ilyina
, known in the family as “the portrait painted by Gleb as a course or
diploma work,” dates back to this period.

He continued his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg
with I.E. Repin and V.E. Makovsky. Famous works of this period are portraits
of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, Fedor Shalyapin and Natalya
Sapozhnikova, who, like Gleb, was a student of Feshin (we have her work — a
portrait of
Petr Ivanovich Zisserman
).
During the revolution he moved with his brother Petr and his mother to
Omsk, then to Chita. In Chita, he met his future wife,
Natalya Aleksandrovna
Melnikova
, the daughter of a grain merchant from St. Petersburg.
In Chita he painted portraits of high-ranking Japanese officers. Getting to
know them greatly helped Gleb and Petr move to Tokyo, where they spent
several years.
In ]923 he moved to San Francisco. In 1930, he painted one of his most famous
portraits — a portrait of Lou Hoover, the wife of President Hoover. His work
hangs in the White House, the Denver Art Museum, the California Museum in
Oakland, the San Francisco War Memorial and the Bohemian Club, of which
he was a member.
