From the notes of F.F. Vigel (“Notes”, publishing house
“Zakharov”, Moscow), where he writes about dinner at the
Zheltukhins:
«This respectable man was not loving, not kind, and
not loved. He lived in solitude, few visited him, but at
meetings everyone showed him those signs of respect
that then years and rank were not allowed to deny.
When Dovre brought me to him, he thanked both him
and me. His brother, Alexey Fedorovich, was the
mayor in Saransk and was under the command of my
father; this alone already disposed him to be
affectionate with me, and two days later he sent to
invite me to dinner. I won't forget this lunch. I'm not
talking about the table, which could be very good or
very bad; I could not judge that, because everything
that was before my eyes took away my appetite.
There were only four of us: the owner with his wife
and daughter, and I was the fourth. Never before or
since have I met faces more expressive of anger than
the faces of both spouses, Fyodor Fedorovich and
Anna Nikolaevna, née Melgunova. Meanwhile, the
usual smile did not leave their lips, but there was
something contemptuous and malicious in it (with
such
a smile one kills an enemy), and it became more
tender when the eyes of the spouses, created for each
other, met each other. The owner’s conversation with
me was polite, not at all stupid, but very ordinary; it
is clear that in inviting me he followed only the
accepted custom. And I would gladly save him from
that. The thinness, pallor and eternal trembling of the
servants, the deep sadness and fears depicted on the
features of his married, divorced daughter
Kakhovskaya, her silence and downcast glances,
everything showed me that I was in a kingdom of
horror, as the city rumor subsequently confirmed to
me. Getting up from the table, I hurried out, and,
fortunately, they did not stop me. Leaving this house,
a funny thought came to me to compare myself with
Daniel, when, by the mercy of God, he emerged
unharmed from the lion’s den.»
