Dmitry Petrovich Gorchakov (1758 - 1824)
Prince Dmitry Petrovich is the great-grandfather of
Nadezhda Nikolaevna
Moiseeva
, the wife of
Pyotr Alexandrovich Ilyin
, that is, our direct
great-great-great-great-grandfather.
He belonged to the poor Kostroma branch of the princely family of the
Gorchakovs. Collegiate adviser, member of the Imperial Russian Academy,
famous writer. Having received a good home education, he entered military
service and was an adjutant to Prince Petr Gagarin. He participated as
a volunteer in the assault on Izmail, was noted in the report of Alexander
Suvorov and was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th degree. In 1780 he
retired with the rank of second major. Under Alexander I, Gorchakov was the
Tauride provincial prosecutor and the head of the office in the Moldavian
army. In 1813 he was vice-governor in Kostroma. In 1816 he retired and in
recent years lived in Moscow. In 1807 he was elected a member of the Russian
Academy, and in 1811 — a member of the society «Conversation of lovers of
the Russian word». However, Gorchakov managed to establish equally good
relations with people of different directions. He was greatly appreciated by
Shishkov and Aksakov, Karamzin and Voeikov. Gorchakov's satires had some
influence on Pushkin the lyceum student. The works of Prince Gorchakov
were first collected by his granddaughter, Princess Elena Gorchakova, in 1890:
“Works of D.P. Gorchakov."
As known, Prince Gorchakov was a poet and writer of Catherine’s time. I had
a book of his works, which is still difficult to read today. He was a handsome
man and greatly upset my great-grandmother [
actually great-great-
grandmother]
with his female victories. Often she, who was very beautiful
herself, cried inconsolably. They had three more sons — Prince Mikhail
Dmitrievich, later of sad memory the commander-in-chief at the surrender of
Sevastopol, and Prince Petr Dmitrievich, governor general in Siberia.
