Photograph Nadezda Nikolaevna Ilyin (nee Moiseev) (1835 – 1895) One of the five children of Nikolai Alekseevich and Varvara Ivanovna  Moiseeva. As a child, we lived modestly in  Cheremyshevo   in the summer,  doing handicrafts, in the winter in Kazan, renting an apartment on  Pokrovskaya street opposite the post office, in the house of Prince Dolgorukov.  Nikolay Alekseevich died when the children were minors and the family’s  affairs were upset.   Pyotr Gavrilovich Ossokin , the nephew of Nikolay  Alekseevich, the son of his half-sister Praskovya Ermolaevna Velikopolskaya,  married to Gavrila Ivanovich Ossokin, was appointed guardian of the  children. He played a huge role in the family, uncontrollably managing the  property of the orphans and their fate for many years. Nadezhda Nikolaevna’s  mother  Varvara Ivanovna , unhappy with her husband, who was younger  than him and who saw only grief from him from playing cards and was  almost ruined, irrevocably followed to her young, intelligent and energetic  nephew. .... My parents played a role in the society, were, of course, familiar with  everyone, but they could not hold receptions at home due to lack of funds. The  whole matter was limited to making and returning visits more or less often,  depending on the proximity. Mother went to big balls, but not often — maybe three or four times a year. In  the evening the hairdresser Duval usually came to do his mother’s hair. It was  very funny to see my dear and never dandyish mother, having dinner in   a simple robe, in a solemn, complex coiffure made by the best Kazan artist. ... My mother was remarkably literate. She wrote in Russian and French without  error, which was a rarity at that time in the so-called aristocratic life. My  father always wrote poorly, and serious letters and papers were proofread by  my mother. 33-year-old  Pyotr Aleksandrovich   is a neighbor of the Moiseevs, who had  three daughters of marriageable age. He began to look closely at the Moiseev  girls, and his choice fell on Nadenka, 17 years old. The grandfather did not  dare to make an offer and turned to their guardian  Pyotr Gavrilovich  Osokin   for help. Grandfather’s birthday approached, he invited Osokin to  Petrovo  for breakfast, they drank a bottle of champagne and had   a heart-to-heart talk. Pyotr Gavrilovich promised his full assistance, and since  he enjoyed unlimited authority with  Varvara Ivanovna , success was ensured. When he let my grandfather know that he had prepared the ground and the  proposal would be accepted, Pyotr Alexandrovich came to  Cheremyshevo ,  and after lunch it somehow happened that he and Nadenka were left alone in  the hall. Then he made a formal declaration to her, she expressed her consent,  and after that they walked around the hall arm in arm, talking tenderly. The  door creaked, the face of the old governess and companion, Olga Feodorovna  Collignon, appeared through the crack, and, having discovered such  “intimacy,” she expressed an extreme degree of amazement and horror - and  disappeared! She comes to Varvara Ivanovna in complete indignation. “This is  terrible... there is Pyotr and Nadenka... arm in arm...”. “You’re a fool!” the  great-grandmother interrupted her chaste friend. “He asked her to marry  him” The wedding was held in November.
