Boratynskie in Kazan
Olga Alexandrovna
Ilyina (Boratynskaya)
The estate on Bolshaya Lyadskaya (now Gorky Street, 25) was built at the end
of the 18th century for Countess V.V. Apraksina. In 1836, the estate passed to
the Mamaevs. After the Mamaevs, the estate passed from owner to owner — to
the Chemodurovs, Kolbetskys (our distant relatives — Nikolay Vasilyevich
Kolbetskoy was married to Nadezhda Ermolaevna, the daughter of
Nadezhda
Sergeevna Bolkhovskaya
(Velikopolskaya), Kazins.
The Boratynsky estate began to belong to the Boratynskys in 1869: it was
bought by the son of the poet Evgeny Boratynsky - Nikolay, who settled here
with his family — wife Olga Alexandrovna and children. Nikolay Boratynsky
(1835-1898) was the leader of the nobility of the Kazan district.
Under the Boratynskys, the main house of the estate underwent both external
and internal alterations: the house was expanded with brick walls from the
west and north, a semicircular stone terrace was built, and images of the
Boratynskys' emblem appeared in the molding of the hall. The daughter of
N. E. Boratynsky, Ksenia Nikolaevna Alekseeva, wrote in her memoirs: “The
house from the outside, although unpresenable, is a stylish wooden one-story
mansion with two wings. But inside the house is big and beautiful. My father
bought it before I was born and, having made an extension, expanded the
large hall with choirs and a stucco ceiling, on which our emblem was
displayed between the patterns.”
The White Hall was the heart and soul of the House: “Our hall! A row of
crystal chandeliers, white columns, high stucco ceilings with our coats of
arms, dark portraits along the walls... This hall was the center of the
universe... our past was here and the past of our ancestors. The glass door of
the White Hall was open to the garden and from there flowed the breath of
sun-warmed herbs, lilacs and earth,” recalled the poet’s great-granddaughter
Olga Ilyina-Boratynskaya
, the wife of
Kirill Borisovich Ilyin
.
A semicircular stone terrace led from the main house to a garden lined with
birch trees. In the yard there were carriage houses, sheds, and a janitor's
house.
After the October Coup of 1917, the house housed various institutions of the
People's Commissariat for Education: a school for eliminating illiteracy among
adults, a kindergarten. Since 1932, the main house housed a music school
named after. P.I. Tchaikovsky. One of the most famous students of this school
is composer Sofya Gubaidullina.
Since 1990, the E. A. Boratynsky Museum has been located in the estate
